Pressure pulsation shakes pipes and hardens butt welds, particularly when resonance occurs causing fracture that results in spills.
Pulsation causes the gaskets between flanges, and seals to migrate, uncontrollable floods and contamination often happen. Selection of a flow through pressure wave pulsation interceptor, to reduce the residual pressure pulsation level to as low as 10 % or less will generally prevent these disasters. The pressure surge from starting a pump, that has to overcome a large amount of liquid that is a head of it in the pipe, generates the opening force - sustained for a long enough period - to lift the over pressure system relief protection valve. This is a complete wastage of energy, and may also be dangerous.
Select a surge alleviator to prevent the surge exceeding 9% above system maximum working pressure.

Pipe hammer, pulsation, shock, surge overpressure, all decrease the life of components by fatigue. Systems that are protected by burst discs or "rupture discs" suffer from premature repeated disc rupture, making spills a common occurrence.
To normalize these systems, select a pressure pulsation interceptor on the basis of reducing the residual pulsation to not more than 7.5% of theoretical steady state pressure.
